Tiberias was founded by Herod Antipas in 20 BCE on the westwen shores of the Sea of Galilee, and was named after the contemporary emperor Tiberius.
After the conquest and destruction of Jeruaslem in 70 CE, Tiberias developed to be the biggest and most important Jewish center in the Holy Land.
Excavavtions at ancient Tiberias uncovered various remains from Classical to Crusaders times.
