“The Hanging Church” is the nickname of of Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, which is one of the oldest churches in Egypt, appreantly established as early as the 3rd century CE.
It’s name derives from the fact that it is built on a Roman fortress in old Cairo.
Since 1047 it is the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria.
