Ben-Ezra Synagogue

“Ben-Ezra Synagogue” is one of the oldest syngogues in Cairo . The founding date of the syngogue is unknown, but it was probably established in pre-Islamic times. The building was torn down in 1012,  and later burned again in 1168. The current building is from the 1890’s.

The Synagogue is mostly famous for it’s “Genizah”  of some 300,000  Jewish documents, some written by the famous Jewish Philosopher Maimonides .

Of the 80,000 Jews recoreded in Cairo in the 1920’s only a dozen remain, and the syngogue functions today as a musum and a tourist attraction rather then serving a functioning community.
