A Christian Oriented Tour of Galilee
The Galilee is most famous for the Christian world as the homeland of Jesus of Nazareth. Being so, we start by heading towards Nazareth
, passing Caesarea
, and Megiddo
, probable location of “Armageddon” (Revelation 16:16), on the way.
At Nazareth itself we first visit the Catholic Church of Annunciation
(Luke 1), its Archaeological Museum
and the nearby S. Joseph Church
. Strolling through the Market we visit the Synagogue church
(Luke 4), and up to “Mary’s Well
“, and S. Gabriel church
.
Nearby we visit Cana , possible location of the “first miracle” performed by Jesus, in turning water into wine (John 2).
We then head towards the Sea of Galilee and possibly stop for lunch in one of the local fish restaurants (“Saint Peter’s fish any one?..” ), as well as a baptism ceremony at the Jordan River
at “Yardenit”
.
If prefering to explore the northern side of the lake, we can visit Mount of Beatitudes , and “Domus Galilaeae”
, which relates to the “Sermon on the Mount” (Luke 6). Next to it we can visit Chorazin
, and below it, at Tabgha, we can review the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and fishes
(Luke 9), and the “Church of the Primacy of Peter”
(John 21). We then continue to visit Capernaum
, “the town of Jesus“, to review its archaeological finds.
Heading back, and if time permits, we can stop to view the finds related to Bethsaida
and Chorazin
. We can also stop at the new excavation at Magdala
, hometown of Mary Magdalene, where recently a first century Synagogue was discovered (!).
Nearby at Ginosar we can visit the famous 2000 year old ”Sea of Galilee Boat“ is displayed. Nearby we can also go for a Sail on the Sea of Galilee
.
We can also visit Ancient Tiberias , regional center since the days of the Emperor Tiberius (hence its name).
If returning to Jerusalem, we could return through the Jordan Valley, passing by Belvoir , Beit She’an
, Aenon near Salim
, Jericho
, Baptism site (el-Maghtas/ Qasr el-Yahud)
, Qumran
(site of the find of the Dead Sea Scrolls), and the Good Samaritan Inn
.
