The “Church of the Holy Archangles” in the Armenian quarter in the old city of Jerusalem is by local tradition built over the house the high priest Annas , the father in law of Caiaphas , the high priest known in the New Testament to interrogate Jesus (John 18:13, cf. luke 3:2). Later both Annas and Caiaphas interrogated Peter and John (Acts 4:6). Annas son Annas had also “James the Just” executed (Ant. 20 9).
In the courtyard of the church is an old, walled olive tree. By local tradition it is from “Earliest Christian times”, and never seems to grow old. Its fruits is believed to be an effective remedy to high fever. Accordingly the site is known by the Arabic name “Deir el Zitoun” (=”The Monastery of the Olives”).
The site can be visited only with a permit of the Armenian patriachate.
