Khan el-Khalili

“Khan el-Khalili” is one of the biggest local markets (“Suq”) in Cairo , and is considered to be one of the city’s main attractions. Built originally as a royal cemetery of the Fatimids, but after the “Black Death” plaque in the 14th Century, it was redesigend as a caravanserai, mostly for foreign merchants.

Today it is occupied mostly by Egyptian merchants, and geared towards tourists. It’s oldest coffeehouse dates to 1773.
