Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut

The Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut was known in ancient times as Djeser-Djeseru (“Holy of Holies”) and today as “Deir el-Bahari” (Arabic: “The Sea Monastery”).  It was built near the “Valley of the Kings “, on the West bank of the Nile, and was part of the Necropolis of Ancient Thebes.

Hatshepsut  was the only female king in the history of Egypt. To Authorise her power, she portrayed herself as concieved by the chief Egyptian God Amun. This subjest appears in several reliefs that adorn the complex.

The temple walls are also decorated with a unique documentation of a trading expedition sent by Hatshepshut up the upper Nile, and traded with a country called “Punt”.

The site is one of the most impressive monument from Pharonic Egypt.
