Philae Temple

Philae Island is located at the first cataract of the Nile river. In ancient times the Pharaohs, and later the Roman, kept there a strong garisson, as it marked the southern frontier of Egypt.

Several shrines were built on the island, mostly in Ptolemaic period, and  were dedicated mostly to female deities and midwifery.

In 1902 the completion of the Aswan lower dam started causing annual floods of the island and its temples.

In the 1960’s a project of relocating the Temples to nearby (and 500 m higher..) Agikia Island was launched, and that is where the “Philae Temples” are presented to the publich to this day.
