Sergius and Bacchus Church

Saint Sergius and Bacchus Church in Cairo, known also as “Abu Serga”, is one of the oldset Coptic Churches in Egypt. It is believed to be built over the spot where the “Holy Family”, Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus rested, during their flight to Egypt.

The church itself is named after Sergius and Bacchus, to Soldiers in the Roman army who were martyred in the 4th century CE by emperor Maximian.

Until the 11th century, the church was also the place where many of the Coptic Patriarchs of Egypt were elected.
