“Stella Maris” (from Latin – “Star of the Sea”) is a monastic complex built on the NW edge of the Carmel mountain, above Haifa
, by the Carmelites
after failing to aquire the plot of Elijah’s Cave
nearby.
The current monastery and church was completed in 1836. The church is believed to be above a cave where Elisha, Elijah, and the “Holy Family” hid.
