Tomb of Jesus

The tomb of Jesus is described in the Gospel of John to be “Near” the “Golgotha“ , the hill where he was crucified, appearently in a garden outside the city. In the early 4th century CE both sites were identified, and a large church complex were built over them, known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre  .

The surface around the burial cave was removed and an aedicule was built over it, as well as a large hallowed dome (“Rotunda” with “Okulus”). The tomb itself is right under the dome, and has two rooms. The inner room has a ledge on the right side believed to be the very place where the body of Jesus was laid. Today it is covered by marble slabs, and usually candles are lit over it. The tomb is maintained by the Greek-Orthodox church and is considered to be the holiest site in Christendom.
