Church of Mary Magdalene on Mount of Olives

Mary Magdlene Russian church Jerusalem exteriorThe Church of Mary Magdlene is a Russian Orthodox church located on Mount of Olives , near the  Garden of Gethsemane.

Built in 1886, The church has a traditional Russian church design, including a tented roof and onion shaped domes.

MAry Magdalene Russian Church interiorIn 1920 Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovnaher fellow nun were buried in the church. In 1988 Prince Alice, her relative, was buried there as well. Over the years her grandsons Prince Charles and Prince William have visited the church several times.

Near the church steps carved in the rock are believed to have been used by Jesus when residing in Bethany.

For a full appreciation of the site it is recommended to combine it with a guided day tour of Jerusalem
