Hasmonean Water Tunnel, Armon Hanatziv

Hasmonean Water tunnelThe “Hasmonean Water Tunnel” is a small section of the “low aqueduct” which was constructed probably by the Hasmoneans, 2200 years ago, to deliver water to Jerusalem from springs near Hebron, 20 km south of Jerusalem(!).

Since Jerusalem is only 30 meters lower then the water sources, the aqueduct was meticously planned to carry the water in an agle of 1 promil (=1 m drop for every 1 km!).

The aqueduct was also used periodically also in later periods, and up to British times. It is 423 m long and has five ventilation shafts.

Walking through it requires light devices.
