Tourists from the following 29 (!) countries will NOT have to be quarantined upon arrival to Israel: Australia, Uruguay, UAE, Ireland, Taiwan, Norway, Singapore, Portugal, Thailand, Canada, Austria, Estonia, Italy, Bulgaria, United Kingdom, Georgia, Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong, Hungary, Jordan, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Slovenia, Finland, Cyprus and Croatia.B. Within 45 days a new fast virus test service will be introduced at Tel-Aviv airport. Tourists from ANY country coming to travel in Israel will be tested upon arrival and if negative to COVID19, they will be permitted to enter and tour the country. Results will be given within 14 hours, but hopefully they will improve the service to 1-2 hours.It seems that tourism to Israel will resumed within the next two months. This photo was taken almost two months ago. On that day we headed to Caesarea and then to the airport. I was leading the last tour order safely to their departure, with a bad feeling I will not be guiding for a while.
Indeed the global pandemic reached Israel and caused relatively a low fatality, but a major financial crisis, especially in tourism.
So what do you when locked at home for so long?

A tour order I received last week proved to be one

A tour order I received last week proved to be one of the most exciting experiences in my career. The governor of Naxos, Mr. Ioannis Margaritis, wanted a private tour of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre, but has learned on the way to the city that is cousin , father Bartholomew, was a high official in the church.. Father Bartholomew was very nice and first showed us the church of John the Baptist (prodromos) although it is not yet open to the public , after a major renovation project, and then he led us through the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
After showing us the “conventional” parts, to my great surprise he took us BEHIND the Golgotha, into a room that I thought was just a service room of the Greek-orthodox church.
It proved to have a rare view of the foundation of the Golgotha, the hill on which Jesus was crucified, but from the BACK.
Amazed at this, I told father Bartholomew I am a veteran guide at this church , and read so much about it , but never read about the back part of the Golgotha being visible, and never before saw this.
He smiled, and replied “and you will never see it again”, and moved on..
So at least I managed to get two quick photos before we left..

Next father Bartholomew took his cousin, governor of Naxos, Mr. Ioannis Margaritis, and me, to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and gave us a very private tour, avoiding any lines as he was a staff member in the church.
Being so, my guest got to go straight into the Tomb of Jesus, as well as to touch and pray at the Golgotha with out any waits. Father Bartholomew also showed us the “stone of unction”, the “stone of flagellation”, the “prison of Christ”, and the “chapel of the finding of the cross” , all in less then 30 minutes.. 😇. .
But the real treat was.. well.. to be presented in the next and final post 😇. .
* The first photo in this post is another location permitted only to guests of the Greek-Orthodox church - a rooftop view of the entrance to the Holy Sepulchre. .

Not every day do you get to be SOOO fortunate to have a private tour by one of the highest officials of the church of the Holy Sepulchre, but last week it actually happened to me!
It started with a tour request of Jerusalem by the governor of Naxos, Mr. Ioannis Margaritis @margaritisio.
When we met he mentioned his cousin had a high function in the church of the Holy Sepulchre. When we met him I realized - he wasn’t kidding! 😇. Father Bartholomew took us first to the Church of John the Baptist in the Christian Quarter, which he is in charge of. Recently he completed managing a big restoration project of the church, and I was so excited to see its interior before officially opened again to the public!😇. He even showed us the altar behind the iconostasis, which is NEVER shown to the public, not even to the church congregation!🤫. But as it turns out - the best was yet to come!.. check out the next post🤗

The burial of Jesus was done in haste as it was a Friday afternoon and Shabbath was coming close. According to the Gospels a wealthy Jew named Joseph of Arimathea donated his own new tomb for the burial of Jesus, and according to the Gospel of John it was near the site of the crucifixion (“Golgotha”). The wall mosaic at the entrance to the Holy Sepulchre presents the sequence of events from the death of Jesus to his burial. It is a great tool for tour guides to help them explain the events that are documented in the Church of the the Holy Sepulchre, and a nice example of preserving Byzantine style of Christian art. .

The entombment of the body of Jesus is recorded by all Gospels, but it’s exact location is not given. It is assumed that in most cases the Jews would prepare the body of a deceased person inside the burial cave, yet in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a few centuries ago a stone placed between the Golgotha and the Tomb of Jesus is venerated as the “stone of Unction”. The center piece of the Wall mosaic behind that stone presents the subject in a typical Byzantine style. .
