Umm Ar-Rasas (Arabic: “Mother of the bronze”) was a military base in Roman and Byzantine times, that was gradually abanodoned after the Muslim conquest of the region. North of the army base a civilian village proved to bear remarkable remains of ancient churches with detailed mosaic floors. In 2004 the site was recognised as a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO.
