Khirbet Beit Loya is an archaeological site in the southern Judean “Shefelah“. It was settled between the Israelite and the Byzantine periods.
By Mormon tradition the site was home of Prophet Lehi and his family before sailing to America.
In the 1980’s a Byzantine period Basilical church was uncovered at the site, with well preserved mosaic floors, including evidence of Iconocalsm, perhaps caused in the Early Muslim period.
Nearby, at “Khirbet Amudim” a remarkable cave supported by pillars can also be seen. IT may have functioned as a regional quarry in ancient times.
