“Ramses II’s Gate Garden” is located in the center of old Jaffa, in an area that was destroyed by the British in 1936 , and was later, in the 1950’s, known for crime and prostitution activity. Archaeological excavations in the 1960’s exposed various remains from the long and rish history of Jaffa , including a fragment of an Egyptian triumphal arch dated to the time of Ramses II. This is an important testimoney to the rule of the Egyptians over Canaan up to the 12th Century BCE, shortly before Philistine got a hold of the southern coastal plain, including the area o Jaffa.
The gate garden is an archaeological site where an ancient Egyptian gate from a building was discovered. The original gate has been replaced with a replica. It’s interesting what was uncovered here, but the gate and the site itself is not much to look at.
