Shechem (called in Arabic – “Nablus”) is a city in Samaria with a long and rich history. Known as “Shechem” in Canaanite and Israelite times, “Neapolis” in Roman times, and “Nablus” since Muslim times. Since the 1990’s Shechem is in the Jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. Within the city are several tourist attractions, such as the main market (Kasbah), Jacob’s well, Joseph’s Tomb and Tell Balata. Above Shechem is an important town of the Samaritans – Kiryat Luza.
