An off-road, untamed, and rough experience in the most beautiful part of the Negev Desert. Created about 250 millions of years ago, the Ramon Crater was formed by water erosion through mostly sandstone. The result is a ‘Machtesh’ the largest of its type in the world, which provides a rare window to the far past. With the off-road vehicle you will be able to explore the heart of this majestic geological wonder, including its human past, and current wildlife.
Search for Fossils, Plants – and Poo
We start at the Mizpe Ramon and drive down through the “Independence ascent” into the giant “Machtesh” (crater). The rocks around us were formed some 220 million years old – older then the dinosaurs of the Jurassic era! We will follow some unique geomorphological formations, track some fossils, analyze some desert plants, and trace wild animal tracks (e.g. poo..).
In the heart of the crater we will spot a small spring with a Roman era caravanserai station next to it. This is remnant of the Nabatean “Incense route” that passed through the crater, delivering aromatic spices and perfumed to the Romans.
Eat and Swim in the Desert
The tour can also include an authentic lunch experience with a Bedouin family in their hospitality tent. You will learn how real Pita bread is made, and the taste of the best herbal tea!
And if in the right season, the tour can also include a swim in one of the waterholes left from the winter. Refresh your self while the coffee is being brewed, and at sunset head back to the departure point. Pending on time, it is also be possible to visit one of the wineries north of the crater, and sample some of the local wine.
Extreme your Tour!
The tour can also include a children-friendly rappelling / abseiling experience at the northern cliff of the crater.
If we continue into the night, the tour can also include a special stargazing experience, combined with a bon-fire and some desert stories before bed time.
