The Ramon Crater is a unique geological formation in the Negev, half way between Tel-Aviv and Eilat. It was formed by specific and unique geomorpholigical and climatic conditions. In fact, southern Israel is the only place on the planet where this type of crater can be seen.
Being a 2.5 hours drive from Tel-Aviv, we recommend allocating two days to properly appreciate this remote and beautiful region.
Day 1 – Rappelling and Stargazing
Reaching the region from Tel-Aviv, On the way to the crater it is recommended to visit Ben Gurion’s Tomb and Desert Home. This is where the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, retired, in hopes of attracting more people to the Negev by setting a personal exsample.
Nearby, we will ascend to the Ancient Nabatean city of Avdat. About 2,000 years ago, Avdat was an important caravanserai station along the incense route between Yemen and Gaza. Later, it developed into a Roman city and military base. Eventually, it was abandoned. A wealth of finds made at the site illustrated its fascinating history up to the collapse of the Byzantine Empire.
Upon reaching the Ramon crater it will take our breath away, as the view is simply that incredible! Nearby, we will join a tour at the visitors center, partially devoted to the memory of the first Israeli Astronaut, Ilan Ramon. Outside the visitors center is a popular semi-extreme attraction, rappelling 15 meters down the crater. Due to the minimal light pollution, the crater is also a great place for stargazing, which can be arranged after dinner.
Day 2 – Exploring the Crater
The next morning, we will embark on an off-road tour of the Ramon Crater, including parts of The “Incense Route” and The “Carpentry”. These activities will expose you to the lesser known parts of the crater, a mix of geology, archaeology, and desert wildlife.
For a Bedouin experience, we could arrange a camel ride in the area. If reserved in advance, we can also have an authentic Bedouin lunch experience. Tired and also content, we end the day with some Bedouin sweet tea and head back to Tel-Aviv.
