The city of Akko is inhabited at least for 4,000 years. During the Second Crusaders period (1191-1291) it functioned as the capital of the Crusaders kingdom, although the kingdom was named after Jerusalem. The city was densely populated by Italian merchant guilds, a busy port, and two fortified enclosures, of the Knights' Hospitallers, and the Knights' Templars. This photo is part of a panorama taken from a rare angle at the southwestern edge of the Akko's walls. Some 800 years ago here were the foundations of a mighty headquarters of the Templars, whose entry was toppled with two Golden Lions. Today, almost nothing is left of this mighty fort, whose remains were used by the Ottomans to store ammunition. Set on a hilltop high above the Jordan valley, Alexandrion was probably built by Hasmonean King Alexander Jannaeus and named after him. Later King Herod also used the place. In fact, In 30 BCE he locked his dear wife, the Hasmonean princess Miriam, in Alexandrion. He feared she would lead a revolt against him, while he is gone, to meet Augustus. He even gave orders to kill her, if he doesn’t return alive from the critical meeting. Herod did return alive, yet a year later he executed her after all. He simply loved her to death!Furthermore, several years later, he executed also two of his sons, and buried them in Alexandrion.To this day this significant site was barely excavated and is barely visited. It requires a strenuous hike up to its top. But it is SOOO worth the effort! The winding roads of the Judean Desert led us to the plains of Jericho. We passed by the Baptism Site and then ascended to a mountain top that had both a religious and political significance. Two of Herod’s sons are even buried here!

The Judean Desert is full of treasures - The Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient fortified palaces, abandoned monasteries, and whose knows what else.
