Touring Capernaum
Capernaum is about a 2 hours drive from Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem. It is not a big site and can be reviewed in less than an hour if you are in a rush. Its main attraction is its ancient synagogue. Built in the 5th century, it is the most impressive ancient synagogue found in Israel. Beneath, are remains of the first century synagogue, which Jesus attended. Nearby, an octagonal shaped modern church hovers above a 5th century church of the same shape. Both are said to be built above the home where Jesus stayed, the home of Peter’s mother in law. It is also recommended to walk to the shoreline and appreciate the great panoramas of the Sea of Galilee and its vicinity.
It is recommended to combine a visit to Capernaum with other holy Christian sites in the area. Most popular are Mount of Beatitudes, the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fish, the Church of the Primacy of Peter, Magdala, the Sea of Galilee Boat and more.
