Your tour to Jerusalem begins at the stunning panoramic viewpoint of the Old City from the Mount of Olives. Nearby, you could also visit the Chapel of the Ascension, which is said to be where Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection. Heading north, you will find yourself on the Via Dolorosa. By Catholic tradition this is the very path Jesus took after his trial at the city’s praetorium. Walking along the ‘Stations of the cross’ you’ll enter the Christian quarter and reach the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Here, by centuries’ old tradition, is the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Beside its holy parts, the church’s architecture and ornamentation is a fascinating reflection of the site’s turbulent history.
After such an intense experience, the Christian Quarter’s market is a good place for a lunch break – and purchasing local souvenirs. Continuing by car, you’ll drive through the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim. We could also drive through the city’s ‘Capitol Hill’ and have a quick review of the highlights of the Israel Museum. A nice way to end the day might also be a stroll or possibly fine-dining in the lively Mahane Yehudah Market.
