Two-Day Private Tour to Petra

Two-Day Private Tour to Petra

Petra is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The Tomb Façades carved in a spectacular desert landscape make Petra a truly enchanting destination. However, reaching it is quite a logistical challenge. It is 4 hours drive from Amman and 2 hours drive from Aqaba. Moreover, if you are staying in Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem it involves another 5 hours’ drive and a border crossing procedure. Technically it is possible to do it all in one very long day (that lasts about 18 hours and starts 2am). We recommend setting a two-day tour to Petra, with the following itinerary –

Day 1 – Explore Wadi Rum

A 5 hours’ drive from Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem will get you to the border crossing near Eilat. Once you’re on the Jordanian site, your Jordanian guide will greet you and drive you into the fantastic nature reserve of Wadi Rum. The giant sandstone rocks protruding from dunes form a spectacular Martian-like landscape. You will have a Bedouin-style lunch feast, followed by a 4×4 off-road tour in Wadi Rum. In the evening, you will reach Wadi Musa, next to Petra. On certain evenings you can consider joining the  Petra Night Tour. But the real adventure begins tomorrow morning.

Day 2 – Discover Petra

An early start will get you to the site before the heat and the crowds. Walk through the famous Siq, a winding canyon leading to the iconic Treasury (Al Khazane) monument. Carved some 2000 years ago, this iconic tomb façade is a true marvel. Take the time to appreciate it in detail, and continue into the city center, passing by the royal tombs and Petra’s theatre. After a leisurely lunch in front of Petra’s main temple, retrace your steps back to the main entrance, and head back to Eilat. Time permitting, it is also possible to drive through Aqaba on the way back.

Back in Israel, you could either fly back to Tel-Aviv, or spend the night in Eilat and go snorkeling or Scuba Diving at the Red Sea the next day. Either way, this short getaway is a fantastic tour experience you will remember long after returning home!

Did you Know?

Petra’s location was forgotten in the middle-ages. It was rediscovered only in 1812, by a Swiss adventurer.
