banias with erick stackelbeckCaesarea Philippi is an ancient city located in the Golan Heights region of modern-day Israel. Established under the name “Paneon”, the city was a center of pagan worship.  According to the New Testament, in the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” His disciples replied with various answers, including John the Baptist or Elijah. Jesus then asked them directly, “But who do you say that I am?” to which Peter famously answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This event is significant in Christian history as it represents one of the clearest affirmations of Jesus’ divinity.

Today, Caesarea Philippi is a popular tourist destination for those interested in biblical history and archaeology. The ancient ruins of the city, including foundations of several pagan temples, can still be seen.

A tour of Caesarea-Philippi (known also as “Banias”) can be combined in a tour of northern Israel.
