Saint Stephen’s Monastery in Jerusalem
Located in the Kidron valley, the Greek-Orthodox Monastery of Saint Stephen is claiming to be over the placed where Stephanus was stoned to death (Acts 7:59). The Medieval crusaders were appearently to first to suggest the event took place in the Kidron valley, next to the Lions’ Gate, but this monastery, built in 1967, is the first building to commemorate the event at this location. The execution site is said to be on a rocky slope just next to the monastery. It is now a memorial site for Saint Stephen, with its wall is decorated with various Christian themes in a Byzantine-Greek style. Despite its central location and religious significance, this site is suprisingly rarely visited by Christian pilgrims.
A tour of the Monastery of Saint Stephen can be combined with a guided day tour of Jerusalem.
