“Tell al-Sultan” (“Mound of the Sultan” in Arabic) is the name of the site most scholars identify as Biblical Jericho. Located in the midst of modern Jericho , and next to a spring (“Elisha’s Spring”), Tell al-Sultan was in use since the Neolithic age, making it one of the oldest inhabited sites in the world (second only to Göbekli Tepe ). The site is also the lowest inhabited city in the world (250 m below sea level). Ironically evidence to the alleged destruction of Canaanite of Jericho by Joshua (so vividly described in Joshua chapter 6) were not found any where at the site, which support the “Etiological Myth” theory in Bible studies. Next to the site one can take a cable car above the mound to the Monastery of the Temptation .
