The Crucified Man from Jerusalem

crucified jehohanan son of hagkol“Jehohanan Son of Hagkol” was the name written on an ossuary (bone box) found in 1968 is a burial cave in Western Jerusalem. The tomb and the bone box date to the 1st century CE. The skeletal remains found in the bone box included a metal nail piercing the heel bone. This is the only archaeological evidence ever found to crucifixion from Roman times. A replica of the heel bone is on display at the Israel Museum, next to the Pilate Stone and the bone box of Caiaphas, the high priest who interrogated Jesus.

For a full appreciation of the item it is recommended to set a guided tour of the Israel Museum combined with a day tour of Jerusalem.
