Christian Heritage in the Judean Desert

Touring the region between Jerusalem to Jericho can be an incredible experience that takes you through some of the most historically and culturally significant places in Israel. This tour proposal will focus on the Christian heritage sites along these biblical roads.

Explore the Good Samaritan Inn

good-samaritan-inn-museumOur tour begins with a visit to the Good Samaritan Inn. Located half- way between Jerusalem and Jericho, this inn is famous for the “parable of the Good Samaritan”. A man was robbed and left to die on the side of the road, but a Samaritan helped him. The inn has been restored and turned into a themed museum, displaying mosaic floors and other artifacts from the Holy Land.

Baptize in the Jordan River

Jordan river baptism siteNext, we travel to the Baptism Site on the Jordan River. Known also as “Qasr al-Yahud”, it is believed that here is where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The site has a rich history, as it was also said to be where the Israelites crossed the into the Promised Land. Visitors can take part in a baptismal ceremony, or simply observe and appreciate the beauty and significance of the area. If time permits we can also visit the nearby Deir Hajla monastery and/or Laura of Gerasimus. Both sites represent well the monastic movement in this region in the Byzantine period.

Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls

Next, we head to Qumran, famed the Dead Sea Scrolls which were found in its vicinity. The scrolls are a collection of Jewish texts that date back to the Second Temple period and include some of the earliest known versions of the Hebrew Bible. The site also includes the remains of a settlement believed to be the center of the the 2,000 year-old “Yahad” sect.

Follow monks in the Judean Desert

After a lunch break, we make our way to the viewpoint of Saint George Monastery, located in the Wadi Qelt valley. The monastery is built into the side of a cliff and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Founded in the 5th century CE, the monastery is named after Georgius, a monk who was known for his miracles and piety.

Amazing Panoramas of Jericho

Finally, we make our way to the Herodian-era fort of Cypros to take in the breathtaking views of Jericho. Located in the Jordan Valley, Jericho is one of the oldest cities in the world. It had a rich history and is mentioned both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. The viewpoint provides great panoramas of the city, the Jordan Valley, Mount Nebo and the northern end of the Dead Sea. A great way to end a great tour!
