Netivot is a city in southern Israel, located 90 km south of Tel Aviv. It was founded in 1956 as a development town and was primarily populated by Jews from Morocco.

The Tomb of the Baba Sali

Today, Netivot is renowned for being the burial place of Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, a renowned Moroccan-born Jewish scholar and kabbalist, who was known as the “Baba Sali” (meaning “Praying Father” in Arabic). The Baba Sali (1889-1984) was revered for his wisdom, piety, and alleged ability to perform miracles. He moved to Israel in 1970 and settled in Netivot, where he lived until his death.

The tomb of the Baba Sali has become a popular pilgrimage site for Jews, particularly those of Moroccan and Sephardic descent. Many visitors come to pray, seek blessings, and leave prayer notes at the tomb. The site is busiest on the anniversary of the Baba Sali’s death (4th of Shevat in the Hebrew calendar), when tens of thousands of pilgrims visit to pay their respects.
