Nir Oz is a communal farm (Kibbutz) in Southern Israel, 2 km east of the Gaza Strip. It was founded in 1955 and developed agricultural farms specializing in asparagus and turkeys. It also established a silicon plant (Nirlat) and an engineering firm. In 2023, it counted 400 members.
Nir Oz 2023 Massacre
On the morning of October 7th, about 150 Hamas militants attacked the Kibbutz. They killed 46 members and abducted 71. Civilians from Gaza joined the militants, and an amateur Palestinian journalist broadcasted live the unfolding events. The attackers cleared the kibbutz around 13:40, while the first Israeli forces arrived at the Kibbutz only at 14:40. They cleared the remaining civilians and, in the evening, declared complete control of the kibbutz. In later November 40 of abducted Israelis from Nir Oz were released by the Hamas.
