Madaba was a Moabite city mentioned in Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9. In the Roman and Byzantine periods it developed into an urban member of “Provinicia Arabia”, but in the middle ages it was abanodened. In the 1880’s the Catholic church re-settled in the site with Christians from Karak, and gradually a wealth of finds were made, mostly mosaic floors. Most famous is a mosaic floor depicting the a map of the Holy Land in the 6th or 7th century CE.
