According to the Bible Mount Nebo should a hilltop over the NE corner of the Dead Sea and opposite Jericho , where Moses saw the “Promised Land” yet shortly after died, and was buried nearby (Deut. 34:1-6). According to the Book of Maccabees (2:4-7), Mount Nebo is also the place where Jeremiah hid the Ark of the Covenant.
Since the Byzantine period the site of “Syagha” is venerated by Christianity as Mount Nebo. In 1933 remains of a monastery and a church from Byzantine times were uncovered at the summit of the site, and in 2016 the site was reopened after a major renovation project.
On days with a good view one can get a spectacular panorama of “The promised land” from the edge of the site.
